Huawei launched the Mate 90 Pro Max in China on October 1 with a 200MP periscope telephoto camera, a display rated for up to 12,000 nits of local peak brightness and a 6,800mAh battery. Pricing starts at 9,499 yuan, and no global release has been announced (Huawei Central, FoneArena).

Camera system and the Ruiying Z10

The main camera is a 50MP 1/1.28-inch RYYB sensor with optical stabilisation and a variable aperture from f/1.4 to f/4.0. It sits beside a 40MP ultrawide and a 200MP periscope telephoto, which GSMArena lists with a 1/1.28-inch sensor and 4x optical zoom. The front pairs a 13MP ultrawide camera with a 3D depth sensor.

Huawei also launched the Ruiying Z10, an external camera attachment. Gizmochina and Nokiamob describe it as adding a 1-inch RYYB sensor with a 24 to 240mm focal range, 10x continuous optical zoom and an aperture from f/2.0 to f/4.5, at 5,999 yuan (about $900 per Gizmochina); Huawei Central describes it as a teleconverter accessory with up to 10x optical zoom and macro photography. Huawei Central reports that the standard Mate 90 Pro Max does not support the Z10, which works with the Collector's Edition. Huawei also sells a Pro Camera Kit at 19,499 yuan, about $2,910 per GSMArena, bundling a Collector's Edition with the module.

Display, chip and battery

The screen is a 6.9-inch dual-layer LTPO OLED at 2848 by 1320 with a 1 to 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. Huawei's 12,000-nit figure is a local peak for small areas of the image, not sustained full-panel brightness, and has not been tested independently.

The chip depends on memory: the 12GB model uses the Kirin 9050 and the 16GB models the Kirin 9050 Pro, according to GSMArena and IT Home, though some reports list the 9050 Pro for the whole range. It runs HarmonyOS 7. The battery is 6,800mAh, with 100W wired and 50W wireless charging. Gizmochina and Nokiamob list Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, eSIM support and IP68 and IP69 protection.

Dollar conversions are GSMArena's. Gizmochina lists four colours: Rose Gold, Jade Green, Crystal White and Obsidian Black, without saying which apply to which version.

How the pieces fit together

Huawei is positioning the Mate 90 Pro Max as a camera phone first, with large sensors on the phone itself and, on the Collector's Edition, a module for longer zoom at a larger sensor size. The trade is bulk and cost: the module alone costs about two-thirds of the base phone. Buyers who want the faster Kirin 9050 Pro must step up 500 yuan to a 16GB model, and the size of that performance gap is unknown until benchmarks appear. Z10 support appears to be one reason for the Collector's Edition's 1,000-yuan premium over the standard 16GB model.

Availability

Every report places the launch in China, with no information on global availability. No Indian price or launch has been announced.

What to watch next

Watch for independent camera comparisons of the Z10 against the built-in telephoto, benchmarks of the Kirin 9050 versus 9050 Pro, and any global launch announcement.
