Meta Connect 2026 Leaks vs Reality: Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3, a Camera-Free Model, No Watch
Before the September 23 keynote, leaks pointed to two Gen 3 Ray-Ban models, a camera-free pair and a first Meta smartwatch. The glasses arrived; the watch did not.
Meta Connect 2026 ran on September 23 and 24 in Menlo Park. Mark Zuckerberg's own teasers stayed vague, but leaks ahead of the event pointed to Meta's most aggressive smart glasses push yet, along with its first real smartwatch.
<blockquote><strong>Update, October 25:</strong> At Connect, Meta launched Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 from $449, on sale from September 23, and a camera-free Ray-Ban Meta Audio model from $349, shipping October 13. Event coverage reported no smartwatch (<a href="https://vr-expert.com/en-us/meta-connect-2026-recap-vr-glasses-ray-ban-meta-gen-3/">VR Expert</a>, <a href="https://techpulse.press/news/meta-connect-2026-ray-ban-meta-gen-3-audio-vr-glasses-muse/">TechPulse</a>). Most launch details come from event recaps rather than Meta's newsroom.</blockquote>
What leaked versus what launched
| Product | Pre-event leak | At Connect |
|---|---|---|
| Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 | Two models, codenamed "Aperol" and "Bellini", on Qualcomm AR1+ Gen 1 | Launched from $449; nine-hour battery, action button, six microphones, 3K video |
| Camera-free glasses | Model referenced as RW7004 | Ray-Ban Meta Audio, from $349, ships October 13 |
| Smartwatch | "Malibu 2", health-focused, likely Android-based | Not announced |
Two new Ray-Ban glasses, as leaked
The leaked Gen 3 line had two models. Aperol was described as a sunglasses-style design with thicker frames and a bigger battery, and Bellini as a lighter frame for prescription wearers. Both were reportedly built on Qualcomm's new AR1+ Gen 1 chip, said to be 26% smaller and 7% more power-efficient than the AR1 in existing Ray-Ban Meta glasses.
The bigger leaked upgrade was battery life for Live AI, the mode that keeps the glasses listening and responding to what the wearer sees and says. Live AI lasts about 30 minutes of continuous use on existing hardware, and Gen 3 was reported to stretch that to several hours. One report described the camera jump as roughly iPhone 11 to iPhone 13 quality. Launch coverage lists one extra hour of overall battery life, nine hours against eight, plus new Aviator and cat-eye "Zena" frames alongside the Wayfarer (Dymesty).
A camera-free option
Leaks pointed to a model referenced as RW7004 that drops the camera for audio and AI features alone, and Meta did launch a camera-free model. It responds to a criticism that has followed every Ray-Ban Meta generation: people nearby cannot always tell whether they are being recorded. It does not solve that for camera-equipped models, but it gives privacy-conscious buyers a version that avoids the issue.
The concern is real. US law enforcement agencies, including the NYPD's counterterrorism unit, have reportedly circulated internal memos this year describing Ray-Ban Meta glasses as a potential security risk in sensitive places such as police stations and detention centres, because covert recording is hard to detect.
The smartwatch that did not appear
Meta was also reported to be building its first smartwatch, codenamed "Malibu 2", focused on health tracking with deep Meta AI integration and likely running on Android, much as Quest headsets run a customised Android base. Meta has reportedly shelved earlier watch efforts, and it was not part of this year's announcements.
No Indian price or launch has been announced for the new glasses.
What to watch next
Reviews will show whether Gen 3's battery gains hold up in daily Live AI use, and whether Malibu 2 surfaces at a later event.
