Google has launched the Fitbit Edge, a $179.99 fitness tracker with a colour screen, ECG, built-in GPS and a battery the owner can replace. Pre-orders opened on October 12 and it goes on sale on October 27 (Android Authority, How-To Geek). Google calls it its first repairable fitness tracker.

Price and availability

The standard Fitbit Edge costs $179.99, and a Stephen Curry Special Edition with a custom band is $219.99. Bloomberg describes the Edge as a replacement for the Fitbit Charge 6. The price matches the roughly $180 that leaks suggested, though the leaked Gemini integration did not appear in launch coverage.

India: Google has not confirmed an India launch or price. Rupee figures circulating, from about Rs 17,200 (a straight currency conversion) to a tipster's estimate of around Rs 22,000, are unofficial (91mobiles, India TV). For comparison, the Fitbit Air launched in India at Rs 13,999.

Health features

A Health Guardian feature monitors blood pressure trends, insulin resistance trends and high or low heart rate alerts. Coaching around those readings needs Google Health Premium, and every purchase includes three months of it. Overnight, the tracker records skin temperature changes, sleep stages and heart rate variability for a morning recovery score. It supports more than 50 activity types with real-time guidance, heart rate zones and splits, automatically detects up to 100 workout types, and shows turn-by-turn Google Maps directions. These trend readings are wellness indicators, not medical diagnoses.

Bands and compatibility

Bands swap freely: Active Sport $39.99, Magnet Band $59.99, Metal Links $149.99 and a Performance Loop at $49.99 coming soon. The Edge works with Android and iOS, but quick replies to messages are Android only.

What to watch next

Independent tests of the battery claim, GPS accuracy and Health Guardian without a Premium subscription, and any India launch.
