John Ternus Ran His First Apple Keynote. What It Tells Us About Apple After Tim Cook

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max were the headline products at Apple's September 9 event, but the more interesting story was who presented them. It was John Ternus's first keynote as Apple's CEO, eight days after he formally succeeded Tim Cook on September 1. Cook is now executive chairman (Business Chief, MacTrast).

A hardware engineer, not an operations chief

Cook built his reputation on supply chain logistics, making Apple a company that could build and ship hundreds of millions of devices with little friction. Ternus has a different background. He spent about 25 years at Apple and ran its hardware engineering organisation, the team responsible for the physical design of iPhones, Macs and iPads (Beebom). Choosing an engineer rather than another operations specialist says something about where Apple's board expects the next decade of competition to happen.

That background showed in the keynote. It leaned hard on hardware detail: the A20 Pro's 2nm process, the mechanics of the iPhone 18 Pro's variable aperture camera and the 100-plus-part hinge in the new iPhone Duo, presented with a technical depth closer to an engineering review than a typical launch. Reviews were mixed. Some said Ternus slipped smoothly into Cook's role in a traditional launch show; others said the event lacked any clear sign of a new direction (Antyweb).

Three premium phones, one delayed base model

The lineup reflected a strategic choice under Ternus, even if it was likely made before the handover. Apple broke with almost two decades of launching its full iPhone range in September. The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e move to spring 2027, leaving September for the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and the debut of the iPhone Duo foldable.

Splitting launches lets Apple focus manufacturing on premium models when supply is tightest and gives it two hardware news moments a year instead of one. It also raises the average selling price of what ships in September, since the mix is entirely Pro-tier and foldable hardware.

What changes and what does not

Cook has not left. As executive chairman he stays close to the centre of decisions, and continuity is expected in services, retail and operations. What changes is who owns the next big bets. Ternus inherits an iPhone line facing its first real form-factor shift in over a decade, an AI strategy still catching up with rivals' cloud-first approaches, and a foldable category Apple entered years after others.

What to watch next

The real test will not come from one keynote. It is whether Apple can turn its hardware strengths into faster, more convincing on-device AI, where it has moved cautiously while rivals iterate in public, starting with how Siri AI and the iPhone Duo perform in buyers' hands.
