Apple Music Drops Red for a Black-and-White Look, Arriving With iOS 27.2
Apple unveiled a new logo, wordmark and sonic logo on October 21, made with producer Fred again.. and the acoustics firm NEST.

Apple has given Apple Music a new look. On October 21 the company unveiled a brand identity that drops the service's red colour scheme in favour of black and white, with a new logo, a new wordmark and a short sonic logo. Apple's tagline for the effort is "made by sound" (MacRumors).
What changes
| Element | New Apple Music look |
|---|---|
| App icon | Black symbol on white in light mode, white on black in dark mode |
| Wordmark | Bold, lowercase, a custom heavier version of SF Pro |
| In the app | Active tab accent turns blue instead of red; Library sections go monochrome; widgets use a black background |
| Logo | Musical note with rippling forms that echo Apple's Liquid Glass design |
| Sound | A new audio signature made from an original composition |
Apple announced the identity through a YouTube video and a post from the Apple Music account on X, and its Apple Music web page switched to the new branding the same day (MacRumors). The change was partly visible earlier: the new icon appeared in an iOS 27.2 beta on October 13 (MacRumors), and 9to5Mac has listed the other Apple apps getting design changes in iOS 27.2.
How the identity was made
Apple says the visuals were literally shaped by sound. British producer Fred again.. and NEST Acoustics created an original composition, which was split into single notes and played through a transducer into a bath of mineral oil; acrylic logos submerged in the oil were filmed as it rippled. Apple's long-time agency TBWA\Media Arts Lab built the identity from that footage, and the same composition serves as Apple Music's new sonic logo. Fast Company reports the process took several months.
When you will see it
The identity is already appearing in Apple Music originals and event programming, and will extend to marketing and products later. For most people the visible change will be the app, which updates with iOS 27.2 and macOS 27.2. MacRumors expects those releases next week, but Apple has not announced a date, and other outlets have guessed at different days.
The update is global, so Apple Music subscribers in India will get the same icon and design when they install iOS 27.2. Apple Music pricing in India is unchanged.
Why a rebrand matters
Apple Music launched with a red icon and red accents that became part of how the service looked on every iPhone. Moving to black and white aligns it with the neutral visual language of recent Apple software and gives the service a sound-based identity that can travel to audio, events and hardware. Early reaction is mixed, with some subscribers saying they will miss the red that made the app easy to spot. Apple's own video uses colourful animations while the beta icon is plain, so it is not yet clear whether colour will return in the final release.
What to watch next
Whether iOS 27.2 arrives next week and whether the black-and-white icon ships in its final form. Apple holds a product event on October 28, where the new identity could appear in presentation material.
