Logic Pro 13 Arrives, but Its AI Assistant Needs an Apple Creator Studio Subscription

Apple has released Logic Pro 13 for Mac, and its headline AI feature sits behind a subscription. The new Intelligent Assistant is available only to Apple Creator Studio subscribers, not to people who bought Logic Pro outright for $199.99 in the US, according to Apple's release notes.

What changed on 5 November

Logic Pro for Mac 13.0 reached the App Store on Thursday 5 November, in both the Creator Studio and standalone versions, MacRumors reported. Apple first described the update on 27 October as part of a wider Creator Studio refresh covering Final Cut Pro, Motion, Pixelmator Pro, Compressor and the iWork apps. That announcement said the updates would arrive in November at no cost to existing subscribers, but it did not say the assistant would be missing from the one-time purchase.

The 13.0 release notes do. They say the assistant, which is labelled beta, "requires an Apple Creator Studio subscription" and a Mac with Apple silicon. The notes for the standalone edition do not mention the assistant at all, MacRumors found.

What the assistant does

Apple describes the assistant as a helper for production workflows. It can help a user start a new song, set up a vocal track from a single prompt, or refine a project that is already open. Apple says it runs on a mix of Apple-built and third-party models. MusicRadar, which previewed Logic Pro 13 on 28 October, reports that OpenAI models are among them, though Apple's own announcement does not name a provider.

MusicRadar also calls the assistant agentic, meaning it can add tracks, open plug-ins and adjust levels instead of only answering questions. Independent hands-on reports of how well it copes with real sessions are still thin, so those claims remain Apple's and the early previews'.

The requirements are tight. Apple says the assistant needs macOS 27 Golden Gate or later on an Apple Intelligence-capable Mac, and it is limited to US English for now.

What every Logic Pro 13 user gets

Features outside the assistant reach everyone, based on Apple's announcement and MacRumors' rundown. A redesigned Browser pulls loops, one-shots, and instrument and effect patches into one place, tags custom and third-party sounds automatically, and accepts plain-language searches such as "atmospheric pad". Splice sounds are built in.

The Stem Splitter can now break a drum recording into kick, snare, hi-hat, toms, cymbals and other percussion, so a mix can be rebalanced without the original multitracks. The interface adopts Apple's Liquid Glass design. Sidecar lets an iPad act as a multi-touch controller for Live Loops, the Step Sequencer and the mixer, and a new Play Surface adds drum pads, chord pads and a keyboard with expression controls. MusicRadar says existing owners receive version 13 as a free update.

Price and the subscription question

In the US, Creator Studio costs $12.99 a month or $129 a year, with a one-month free trial for new subscribers. College students and educators pay $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year. Buying a new Mac or a qualifying iPad adds three free months. The bundle includes Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Motion, Compressor and MainStage. MusicRadar's preview quoted the annual price as $129.99, a small difference from Apple's own $129, and we have used Apple's figure.

Logic Pro on its own remains $199.99. A producer who wants the assistant today therefore has to subscribe, either instead of owning the app or on top of it. For someone who paid for Logic Pro this year, that can look like a headline feature held back. Apple has not said whether the assistant will ever reach one-time buyers.

India pricing and availability

Apple India lists Creator Studio at Rs 399 a month or Rs 3,999 a year after a one-month free trial, and Rs 199 a month or Rs 1,999 a year for verified students and educators. The one-time purchase of Logic Pro on the Mac App Store is Rs 19,900. Apple says the assistant is US English only for now and has not announced when other languages or regions will follow, so Indian subscribers should not assume it will appear on their account.

What to watch next

Apple says more Creator Studio updates will land across November, and Pixelmator Pro was reportedly due to update on the same day as Logic Pro. Freeform's Pixelmator Pro editing and text-to-shape features are scheduled for December. The things to watch are the first serious hands-on tests of the assistant, any widening of language support, and whether Apple softens the subscription requirement for people who bought Logic Pro outright.
