Apple Intelligence Starts Testing in China on November 4, With Alibaba's Qwen Behind Some Features

Apple has confirmed that Apple Intelligence will begin testing in mainland China on November 4, with Alibaba's Qwen models powering some of the features. Apple's China newsroom published the announcement on October 31 Beijing time, and 9to5Mac and MacRumors reported it on October 30 in the United States.

What Apple has confirmed

Apple says the features open for testing from November 4 through the latest iOS developer beta, and that they reach Chinese users with the official release of iOS 27.3 in December. Apple has not given a December date. MacRumors notes that a November 4 date in China likely means the beta appears on November 3 in the US. Apple ties November 4 to the start of testing, not to a promised first beta, and 9to5Mac makes the same distinction.

The announcement gives Chinese iPhone owners a concrete schedule, although it is a staged one. Testers come first, the public release follows a month or more later, and other Apple platforms wait behind both.

Alibaba's Qwen is the partner

Apple says it has partnered with Alibaba to add Qwen support to some Apple Intelligence features. Users will be able to call on Qwen inside Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence, including for understanding text and images. According to 9to5Mac's summary of the release, access involves signing in to a Qwen account or using Sign in with Apple. None of the pages we read names another Chinese partner.

Which features arrive

The list in Apple's release is broad. It covers Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime and Phone, plus Live Translation on AirPods, along with Writing Tools, Visual Intelligence, Clean Up, Genmoji and natural-language photo search. Memory Movies is included, as are Priority Messages, summaries and Smart Reply in Mail, notification summaries, Priority Notifications and a Reduce Interruptions Focus. Notes gets audio transcription summaries, calls get transcript summaries, and Siri accepts typed requests. A tool called Creation, which builds on Writing Tools with Qwen, completes the set.

MacRumors adds that Image Playground will not be available in China. That detail is not in the part of Apple's release we read, so treat it as MacRumors' reporting.

What is left out

The omissions matter as much as the inclusions. Apple's release says this update does not include Siri AI or the other next-generation Apple Intelligence features announced at WWDC 2026. Chinese users therefore start with the earlier feature set and without the headline Siri upgrade.

Apple also says support for other platforms will follow once the necessary approvals are obtained. MacRumors reads that as Mac, iPad and other devices waiting for those approvals. Apple does not say which approvals or from whom.

Which devices qualify

Apple's footnotes set out the hardware. On the phone side, the features require an iPhone 16 or later, the iPhone Duo, an iPhone 15 Pro, an iPhone 15 Pro Max or an iPhone Air. Both Siri and the device language must be set to English or Simplified Chinese, which means users who prefer another language setting are shut out for now.

Live Translation on AirPods works with AirPods 5, AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation, AirPods Pro 2 and later, and AirPods Max 2. The earbuds need the latest firmware and a pairing with an Apple Intelligence enabled iPhone. Visual Intelligence works on all Apple Intelligence enabled iPhone models, and Apple warns that some features may be limited to certain languages or regions.

What it means

Two points stand out, both our reading and not Apple statements. First, the structure of the rollout is cautious. A developer beta, a December public release, no Siri AI and no support yet on Mac or iPad suggests Apple is releasing in steps and keeping the most visible features back. Second, putting Qwen inside Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence means a Chinese model sits in places where users elsewhere interact with Apple's own tools or with other partners. How well that works in daily use is something only testers can judge, and no hands-on reports exist yet.

Apple's announcement concerns mainland China only. It says nothing about changes for other markets, so there is no effect on iPhone owners elsewhere, including in India.

What to watch next

The first sign will be whether the iOS 27.3 developer beta carrying the China features appears on November 3 or 4 as expected. After that, early tester reports on Qwen's quality inside Siri and Writing Tools will show how the partnership performs. Then comes the December public release date for iOS 27.3, and any word from Apple on when Mac and iPad will receive the same features.
