iPhone Duo's Display Cover Layer Is Replaceable: $19 With AppleCare+, $49 Without

Apple's hardware engineering chief says the nano-texture layer that hides the crease can be swapped. Apple's repair price list puts it at $49 without AppleCare+, and it is not a DIY job.

iPhone Duo's Display Cover Layer Is Replaceable: $19 With AppleCare+, $49 Without

Apple says the folding screen on the iPhone Duo has a replaceable cover layer designed to hide the crease, and that replacing it costs $19 for customers with AppleCare+. The detail emerged on October 1 from an interview with Kate Bergeron, Apple's vice president of hardware engineering (9to5Mac, The Apple Post).

<blockquote><strong>Update, October 25:</strong> Apple published its iPhone Duo repair fees on October 14. Without AppleCare+, the cover layer costs $49, the inner display $999, the outer display $379, back glass $199 and a battery $229 (<a href="https://www.macrumors.com/2026/10/14/iphone-duo-cover-layer-and-battery-fees/">MacRumors</a>, <a href="https://www.notebookcheck.net/iPhone-Duo-repair-costs-revealed-a-999-screen-fix-isn-t-even-the-worst-part.1424225.0.html">Notebookcheck</a>). A lab test by HTX measured the crease at 48 microns on a new unit and 167 microns after 3,000 folds (<a href="https://www.ithinkdiff.com/iphone-duo-crease-test-3000-folds/">iThinkDiff</a>).</blockquote>

What Apple said

Bergeron spoke in a TikTok interview with the creator @angietutorials, as reported by 9to5Mac and MacRumors. She said a matte display coating minimises the visible crease and that a cover layer sits on top of the folding inner screen. In her words, as quoted by MacRumors: "It's actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer." MacRumors describes it as a nano-texture cover above the inner display, and AppleInsider quotes Bergeron saying Apple engineered it to wear in for as long as possible before it might need replacing.

What it costs

iPhone Duo repair (US)With AppleCare+Without AppleCare+
Inner display cover layer$19$49
Inner display$99$999
Outer display$29$379
Back glass$29$199
Battery-$229
Theft or loss$149-

AppleCare+ also lists $99 for other accidental damage. The cover layer only covers surface wear and scuffs; dark patches, lines or touch problems point to the inner display itself, which is a far more expensive repair.

Who does the work

The swap is done by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, not at home. Guides warn against peeling the layer off yourself, saying it exposes an uneven surface underneath (Gadget Review), and Apple confirms which repair applies after inspecting the phone.

Why the crease matters

A folding phone's inner display bends along a fold line that tends to become more visible over time. Apple's answer is a sacrificial layer on top, so routine wear affects a part that can be swapped cheaply rather than the display underneath. Unlike rivals that favour hard ultra-thin glass, Apple uses a soft polymer cover layer, a trade-off Techaeris says raises its own durability questions. Early hands-on reviews described the crease as barely visible when new; the HTX test shows it deepening with use.

The phone itself

The iPhone Duo was announced on September 9 as Apple's first foldable, with a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display. It starts at $1,999 for 256GB and uses the A20 Pro chip with Touch ID instead of Face ID. Pre-orders opened on October 16 and sales began on October 23.
