Apple Opens iPhone Duo App Submissions and Requires Duo Screenshots From April 2027

Xcode 27.1 adds Duo support, and a new App Store Connect preview tool shows how product pages will look on the folding phone. Apple says customers get the device from October 23.

Apple has told developers they can submit iPhone Duo-optimised apps to the App Store now, and that from April 2027 every app or game submission must include iPhone Duo screenshots. The notice, published on Apple's developer news page on October 5, 2026, also said the device would reach customers from October 23 (9to5Mac, MacTrast).

<blockquote><strong>Update, October 25:</strong> iPhone Duo pre-orders opened on October 16 from $1,999 and sales began on October 23 in India and more than 70 other markets. Apple has also released the final version of Xcode 27.1 (<a href="https://www.macg.co/logiciels/2026/10/une-semaine-de-liphone-duo-apple-lance-la-version-finale-de-xcode-271-311703">MacG</a>).</blockquote>

What Apple announced

The post is titled "Prepare and submit your apps for iPhone Duo." It tells developers to recompile existing apps with Xcode 27.1, which adds development support for the device, and to use Device Hub to see how an app behaves across every pose and orientation the phone can take. Because the Duo folds, an app has to cope with more shapes than a normal phone screen; Xcode's simulator lets developers fold, unfold and rotate the device, though one French report notes it still has limits for photo and video features.

Apple is also running iPhone Duo developer workshops, and a companion post announced new product page header and search result assets, plus an asset library (MacStories).

The April 2027 deadline

The most important line for studios is that, starting in April 2027, every app or game submission must include iPhone Duo screenshots. That applies to all submissions, not only apps optimised for the new shape, so teams that do not plan to change their layouts will still need to capture and upload Duo images.

That gives developers about six months: modest work for a simple app, more for apps with complex layouts, video or games that assume a fixed screen ratio.

Why it matters

A new form factor is only as useful as the apps that run on it. Apple opened submissions more than two weeks before customers got the hardware so popular apps could be ready on day one. With the badge and new store assets as incentives, and the screenshot rule as the stick, it is pushing the whole catalogue to treat the Duo as a first-class device. A rule that applies to every submission also signals that Apple sees the Duo as a lasting product line.

What users should expect

The main effect is on app quality. Apps tested in Device Hub should handle folding and unfolding without stretched layouts, while apps that have not been updated may look cramped or leave unused space. Apple has not said how it will treat unoptimised older apps beyond the screenshot rule.

What to watch next

Watch for the first apps to carry the optimised badge, developer reports on Device Hub, and how many major apps are updated before the April deadline.
