Sony Ships 2.6 Million PS5 Consoles, Reaching 97.9 Million, and Says Memory Is Secured Through March 2028

Sony shipped 2.6 million PS5 consoles in the three months to 30 September, taking lifetime shipments to 97.9 million, and said it has secured enough memory for its next business year. The figures came in Sony's results on 5 November, which also lifted the PlayStation profit forecast.

PS5 edges toward 100 million

The 2.6 million shipped in the July to September quarter leaves the PS5 about 2.1 million units short of 100 million, by our arithmetic. Push Square expects the milestone to arrive by the next quarterly report, and the holiday quarter makes that plausible. Push Square notes Sony shipped 7.9 million PS5 consoles in the holiday quarter a year earlier. If the PS5 does pass 100 million it would join the PS1, PS2 and PS4.

Year-on-year comparisons differ between outlets. Push Square puts the drop at 1.4 million units, while Gematsu says 0.9 million, so we are not quoting a figure until Sony's own supplement is checked line by line. All outlets agree on the 2.6 million and 97.9 million numbers.

Profit rises even as hardware slows

Sony's filing for the Game & Network Services segment shows sales of 1,208.5 billion yen, up 9 percent, and operating income of 220.1 billion yen, up 83 percent. Last year's quarter included a 31.5 billion yen Bungie impairment and an 18.3 billion yen development cost correction, which flatters the comparison. VGC reports the operating income rise as 89 percent, but the filing itself says 83 percent, so we use that.

Sony also raised its full-year outlook for the segment. Sales are now forecast at 4,830 billion yen, up from 4,540 billion yen in July, and operating income at 700 billion yen, up from 660 billion yen. The filing credits non-first-party software for most of the sales increase, plus cost improvements and network services. It says this is partly offset by lower first-party software sales because of a title release date change, without naming the game. VGC adds that Sony pointed to GTA 6 among third-party titles lifting the forecast.

PlayStation Network reached 127 million monthly active users in September, up 8 million on a year earlier, according to Gematsu and VGC. Gematsu also reports that 78 percent of software sales were full-game digital downloads.

Marvel's Wolverine sells 2.4 million

Sony disclosed for the first time that Marvel's Wolverine has sold more than 2.4 million copies as of 4 November, about seven weeks after its 15 September launch. Push Square calls it a soft start next to Ghost of Yotei, which it says reached 3.3 million in its first month. The figure is a company number and Sony has not said how it counts sales across editions or bundles.

Memory secured through March 2028

The line most relevant to buyers is about memory. Sony told investors "we have aligned on the quantity of memory needed" for projected hardware unit sales, in wording Push Square quotes from the investor presentation. VGC reports that this covers the business year starting April 2027, and Push Square reads it as supply through March 2028. VGC also says Sony offset higher memory costs through cost reductions and price increases, and expects hardware profitability to stay level with the previous year.

That does not tell players what happens to prices. Sony did not disclose what it paid for the memory or its hardware plans for next year, and Push Square points out that it is unclear whether the PS5 will get another price rise. We have found no India price change for the PS5 announced alongside these results, and Indian buyers should check Sony and retailer listings for current prices.

PS6 stays on the roadmap

Sony chief financial officer Lin Tao said the company is making "solid progress" on the next-generation platform, VGC reports. No launch date has been given, and VGC says CEO Hiroki Totoki said earlier this year that no date had been decided. Analysts quoted by VGC expect the PS6 later than many fans hoped, with some pointing to 2028. Those timelines are analyst opinion, not Sony guidance.

What to watch next

The next marker for fans and investors is Sony's holiday quarter report, expected in early 2027, which should show whether the PS5 crosses 100 million. Watch for any PlayStation hardware price announcement in India or elsewhere as memory costs filter through, and for Sony naming the delayed first-party title behind its reduced software forecast. Sony's own supplement and investor presentation remain the best sources for exact figures, and we will correct any number that differs once those documents are compared in full. Until then, treat the shipment totals as settled and the year-on-year comparisons as provisional.
