Google Home's Big Update Fixes Find My Phone, Dimmable Lights and Matter Switch Status
More than 20 changes, mostly reliability fixes for Gemini for Home, camera tiles and device setup, are rolling out on Android and iOS.
Google has started rolling out a large Google Home update that bundles more than 20 improvements, most of them aimed at making Gemini for Home and the app's device controls behave more reliably. The changes began arriving at the end of September on Android and iOS (9to5Google, Droid Life, Android Authority).
Gemini for Home gets quieter and faster
The headline voice change is the Find My Phone command, which Google says has "quality and reliability improvements" without spelling out what changed. Droid Life's reading of the changelog lists more fixes: better filtering of background noise so commands are recognised in a busy room, faster responses to common smart home, media, alarm and timer commands, and a fix for a bug where the assistant got stuck repeating that it did not understand follow-up requests.
Multilingual households also get attention, with Droid Life reporting support for up to three languages, and custom commands in Routines are more reliable. These are fixes to existing behaviour rather than new features.
App and device control fixes
| Area | Fix |
|---|---|
| Lights | Setting brightness to 0% now sends a power-off command; bulbs previously stayed on at minimum |
| Matter switches | Online and offline status now shown accurately; switches were previously wrongly marked offline |
| Window coverings | Awnings, curtains and blinds detected more accurately |
| Camera and doorbell tiles | Clearer filled icons when a device is online |
| Setup | Better Bluetooth connections for Nest devices; cached network credentials speed up additional setups |
| Doorbell ringtones | Preview Nest Doorbell ringtones, including seasonal themes |
| Video playback | Smoother on Android, false "Video not available" error fixed, Walmart Onn camera loading fixed, more responsive iOS progress bar |
Version details
Google posted the changelog in the middle of the night on September 30 and then removed it, Droid Life says, and did not publish version numbers. 9to5Google and NewsBytes list the Android app as version 4.31.27.1. The update is rolling out in stages, and Google describes the Gemini changes as a behind-the-scenes deployment for early access users, so some voice improvements may arrive without an app update to check for.
Who benefits
The update matters most to people who rely on Gemini for Home for daily routines and have several Matter devices or Nest cameras and doorbells. Nothing in the changelog adds a new device category or a major new assistant capability; the value is in removing small annoyances, such as a light that never fully turns off or a switch shown in the wrong state, that make smart home setups feel unreliable.
What to watch next
Watch for Google to republish an official changelog with version numbers, and whether the Gemini voice fixes reach speakers for users outside early access.
