Amazon Alexa+ Launches in India With Hindi and Hinglish Support, Free During Early Access
The generative AI assistant will stay free for Prime members after early access, while non-Prime, Prime Lite and Prime Shopping Edition users will pay ₹2,000 a month.

Amazon launched Alexa+, its generative AI overhaul of the voice assistant, in India on September 16. It is betting that a market with more than nine billion Alexa interactions in the past year is ready for something far more conversational than the command-and-response assistant Indian homes have used for over a decade (TechCrunch, Business Standard).
What makes Alexa+ different
Alexa+ can hold a conversation. Users say the wake word once and keep talking, switch topics, and mix languages in one sentence without the assistant losing track. That matters more in India than in most markets: Alexa+ supports English, Hindi and Hinglish from launch, with more Indian languages promised, and is built to handle the way many households switch languages mid-sentence.
It is available through free Early Access on eligible Echo speakers and displays, Fire TV devices and the Alexa app, with browser access to follow. After early access, it stays free for Prime members and costs ₹2,000 a month for others, including Prime Lite and Prime Shopping Edition members unless they move to a qualifying Prime plan. Amazon has not announced when early access ends (Smartprix).
| User | During early access | After early access |
|---|---|---|
| Prime members | Free | Free |
| Prime Lite and Prime Shopping Edition | Free | ₹2,000 a month |
| Non-Prime customers | Free | ₹2,000 a month |
The pricing is designed to push non-Prime households toward a Prime subscription that also covers shopping, entertainment and delivery, rather than paying for the assistant alone.
Built around Indian services
The localisation goes beyond translation. Alexa+ works with smart home products from Indian makers including Atomberg, Qubo and Wipro, alongside Dreame. It handles meal planning through Sanjeev Kapoor Recipes and suggests entertainment from Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music, JioSaavn, Prime Video and Netflix. For shopping, it can build lists based on household preferences, flag price drops, compare features, summarise verified reviews and track Amazon.in deliveries, with Amazon Now voice ordering for groceries and essentials planned.
It also connects to food delivery through Swiggy, ticket booking through Zomato's District, and travel and dining through MakeMyTrip and EazyDiner. Parental controls are part of the launch, which Amazon stresses because many Echo devices in Indian homes sit in shared family spaces.
The real test is accent
Amazon executives say the harder problem is comprehension across India's accents and code-switching habits, not vocabulary. A company representative said the goal was to be "authentically Indian" in understanding culture, humour and values as well as language. That is a different starting point from Apple's Siri AI, which shipped the same week in English only, with no confirmed timeline for Hindi.
What to watch next
Early access will show whether Alexa+ handles real Hindi-English code-switching as reliably as Amazon claims. After that, the question is how many non-Prime households pay ₹2,000 a month rather than switching to a free alternative.
