Apple Confirms iPhone 18 Pro Max AT&T Outage Bug, and Phones Already Hit Need Replacing
Software updates can stop the fault from striking healthy phones, but Apple says handsets that have already lost service cannot be fixed with code.

Apple has confirmed that some iPhone 18 Pro Max phones on AT&T's network lose cellular service, and that handsets already hit by the fault need a hardware replacement. A software update can stop the problem reaching healthy phones, but it cannot revive one that has already failed. AT&T has separately warned customers that affected phones may be unable to reach 911 (9to5Mac, MacRumors).
What Apple has said
The confirmation came on October 2. Apple describes a "small number" of iPhone 18 Pro Max units on AT&T that lose service and cannot make calls or send texts, with "SOS" in the status bar where the normal signal indicator should be. Apple's statement reads: "We released iOS 27.0.1 earlier this week and strongly encourage all iPhone 18 Pro Max users to update now." A carrier settings update is also rolling out over 14 days, and owners can check for it manually under Settings, General, About. Apple has not disclosed the cause.
| Phone's state | What Apple says to do |
|---|---|
| Working normally on AT&T | Install iOS 27.0.1 and the carrier settings update to prevent the fault |
| Already showing SOS with no service | Software cannot restore it; contact Apple Support or AT&T, or visit an Apple or AT&T store, for a replacement |
Why the update did not help some users
That distinction explains weeks of confusing reports. AT&T sent an urgent text on October 1, quoted by MacRumors: "Some phones may be unable to complete calls/text/data, including to 911. Update to iOS 27.0.1 immediately." Several customers who installed the update the day it arrived still saw SOS and no service (9to5Mac). The release notes for iOS 27.0.1, which came out on September 28, did not mention cellular fixes.
How widespread it is
Apple and AT&T both use the words "small number." Owners dispute that: MacRumors says thousands of users have posted about the fault on the Apple Support Community, Reddit and its own forums, and The Apple Post carried reports of AT&T cellular and eSIM trouble as early as September 27. No count of affected phones has been published.
The modem question
Speculation has centred on the modem. 9to5Mac and MacRumors report that the US iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only new model carrying a Qualcomm cellular modem, while the iPhone 18 Pro and other versions use Apple's own C2 chip; Fast Company names the Qualcomm part as the Snapdragon X80. Apple's own launch announcement, however, describes both Pro models as using the C2 modem, so the company's materials and the press reports do not line up. Apple has not said the modem is the cause, and the theory is unconfirmed.
What affected owners should do
Owners with working service should update now. Owners whose phone already shows SOS should arrange a replacement, keeping ticket numbers and screenshots of the SOS or activation errors (AppleInsider). Apple has not published turnaround times or confirmed that replacements are free in every case.
AT&T's statement, quoted by Fast Company, says Apple "has released a software update to address an issue that may affect calls, data, texts and 911 calls on a small number" of iPhone 18 Pro Max phones. The 911 warning matters most: owners on AT&T should confirm they can place a test call after updating.
The phone and the stakes
The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299 in the United States, according to Apple's newsroom. A hardware fault on Apple's most expensive standard iPhone in its first month on sale is an awkward moment for a company that markets reliability. Apple's guidance covers only AT&T customers in the US; no reports describe the same failure on other carriers, in other countries or on the iPhone 18 Pro.
What to watch next
Watch for Apple to name a root cause or a manufacturing batch, a support document setting out replacement eligibility, any statement from Qualcomm, and whether the carrier settings update reaches everyone within 14 days.
