ANBERNIC has revealed and priced the RG DDS, a clamshell handheld with two screens that borrows its shape from the Nintendo 3DS but runs Android on a Qualcomm Snapdragon G2 Gen 2. It was teased on October 9, and pricing followed: $299.99 for 8GB and 128GB, on pre-order at $284.99, with shipping starting gradually from December 10 (Make Tech Easier, VideoCardz).

Price and memory

Early estimates of around $200 turned out to be too low; an ANBERNIC representative had hinted at "300ish with 8GB." Engadget notes it costs almost double the original Nintendo 3DS. ANBERNIC's existing RG DS sells for about $100.

ANBERNIC says the two screens are matched so they feel like one display, and that 3DS games can be shown at exactly three times native size using integer scaling (TweakTown), which avoids the blur of stretching an image. A Z-axis linear motor handles vibration, stereo speakers face forward, and the hinge uses dual alloy friction mechanisms. A redesigned control centre adjusts performance, cooling, brightness and dual-screen behaviour. ANBERNIC has not explained what the AI button does.

How it compares

The RG DDS follows the layout of the 2014 New Nintendo 3DS but has no glasses-free 3D and bigger screens. The Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 also powers the Retroid Pocket G2, and Notebookcheck expects it to beat the older Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the AYN Thor. Third-party benchmarks shared on Reddit put it almost 20 percent ahead of the Retroid Pocket Duo's Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 in Geekbench and about 50 percent in AnTuTu; those figures are unverified.

ANBERNIC sells directly from its own store, and no Indian price has been announced; buyers in India would pay shipping and import duty on top.

What to watch next

Reviews testing whether 3DS emulation holds a steady frame rate on both screens, battery life under load, fan noise, and whether the AI button proves useful.
