AMD FSR 4.1 Upscaling Is Coming to Xbox Series X and S and the ROG Xbox Ally
The machine-learning upscaler arrives on Microsoft's consoles and handhelds, but neither company has given a release date or any performance figures.

AMD and Microsoft have confirmed that FSR 4.1, AMD's machine-learning upscaling technology, is coming to Xbox Series X and S and to the ROG Xbox Ally handhelds. The announcement came on October 20, with no release date for the consoles and no published performance numbers (Windows Central, VGC).
What was announced
FSR 4.1 uses machine learning to upscale a lower-resolution image to a higher one, and it is heading to Microsoft's current consoles and the Ally handheld family. Xbox chief technology officer Scott Van Vliet confirmed it is "coming soon" to Xbox Series X and S. AMD says FSR 4.1 is part of its Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1 driver, which also brings it to Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards and to Ryzen AI 9, Ryzen AI Max and select Ryzen Z2 processors.
When it arrives
| Hardware | FSR 4.1 timing |
|---|---|
| ROG Xbox Ally X and Ally X20 | First; one report says a preview update from October 23 via Armoury Crate SE (Update Center, Preview Updates) |
| Other ROG Xbox Ally models | Coverage differs on which models are included |
| Xbox Series X and S | "Coming soon"; no date |
| Radeon RX 6000, Ryzen AI PCs | Adrenalin 26.10.1 driver |
The Ally preview build may contain bugs, according to the report that described it (TrueAchievements). Which handhelds are covered has been inconsistent across coverage: Engadget lists the Ally X, X20, Ally S and original Ally, Pure Xbox mentions only the Ally X and X20, and Windows Central corrected an early report that excluded the base Ally (Pure Xbox).
What players might gain
Neither company has published frame rate or image quality numbers. Windows Central and Engadget expect the biggest benefit on the Series S and the Ally S, the lowest-powered hardware, but that is their view. Upscaling lets a game render fewer pixels and reconstruct the rest, which usually means higher frame rates or higher settings at similar quality.
AMD's list of compatible PC titles includes more than 400 games, including 007 First Light and Gears of War: E-Day. Microsoft has not said whether existing Xbox games will need individual updates or whether FSR 4.1 can be switched on at system level, and that will decide how quickly console players see any benefit.
Beyond today's hardware
Microsoft's next-generation Xbox, Project Helix, will use a successor called FSR Diamond (VideoCardz). Gematsu adds that AMD credits Project Amethyst, its collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment, for FSR 4.1 and for Sony's PlayStation upscaling.
What to watch next
A Microsoft date for Series X and S, the first console games to ship with FSR 4.1, and side-by-side tests on the Series S showing how much of the expected benefit is real.
