Volkswagen Opens Orders for the Electric ID. Polo GTI From 39,995 Euros With 166 kW
Volkswagen confirms power, torque, a 52 kWh battery and a 6.8-second sprint. The WLTP range is quoted as 424 km or 431 km depending on the source.

Volkswagen has opened pre-orders for the ID. Polo GTI, its first electric GTI, from 39,995 euros in Germany, about $45,000. The front-wheel-drive hot hatch makes 166 kW and 290 Nm of torque and reaches 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds, according to Volkswagen (Volkswagen, Electrek).
Price and orders
Pre-sales began on October 7. Volkswagen's release says the car comes with extensive standard equipment from 39,995 euros, and Electrek puts that at roughly $45,000, a conversion rather than a US price. The regular ID. Polo starts at 24,995 euros, so the GTI asks about 15,000 euros more. Germany's Elektroquatsch notes the price is slightly above the just-under-39,000-euro figure Volkswagen first indicated, and that prices in Austria and Switzerland may differ. Electrek says US availability is not confirmed, and no delivery dates were given.
What it drives like on paper
The car has a single front-mounted electric motor producing 166 kW (226 PS) and 290 Nm of torque, with a 0 to 100 km/h time of 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 190 km/h. The drive is to the front wheels, and an electronically controlled front differential lock is standard, along with adaptive DCC sports suspension (Automotive World). Volkswagen lists combined energy consumption of 15.7 to 14.2 kWh per 100 km, with zero tailpipe CO2.
A GTI driving profile adjusts the drive, steering and suspension at the push of a steering-wheel button. These are Volkswagen's figures, and no independent road test has been published.
Battery, range and charging
The car uses a 52 kWh (net) nickel-manganese-cobalt battery shared with the standard model. DC fast charging runs at up to 105 kW, taking 10 to 80 percent in about 24 minutes. The range figure differs between sources: Volkswagen's May reveal and South African coverage quote up to 424 km on the WLTP cycle (TimesLIVE), while Electrek and The EV Report cite up to 431 km. The reason for the gap is not explained, so treat 424 km as the conservative figure.

Size, space and interior
Electrek gives the dimensions as 4,096mm long, 1,816mm wide and 1,514mm tall on a 2,599mm wheelbase, roughly the size of the petrol Polo. It says interior space is 19mm greater than in the petrol Polo GTI, and that cargo capacity with the rear seats folded is 1,240 litres against 1,125 litres for the petrol car.
Standard equipment includes 19-inch alloy wheels, a GTI sports steering wheel and premium sports seats, according to Electrek. The cabin has a 10.25-inch digital cockpit and a 12.9-inch infotainment display. A Retro Display mode mimics the instrument cluster of the first-generation Golf, a nod to the car that started the GTI line.
Why the price matters
At 39,995 euros the GTI sits a long way above the 24,995 euro starting price of the standard electric Polo, and the sources do not itemise what the extra money buys beyond the GTI hardware and equipment listed above. Electrek's commenters argue the price will limit sales outside Europe, though that is reader opinion, not a sales forecast.
For Volkswagen, the car is a test of whether the GTI name can carry over to electric power. The more powerful, rear-wheel-drive ID.3 GTI is the next step, with Electrek reporting that its pre-orders open in early 2027.
What to watch next
Watch for the first independent road tests, a settled WLTP range figure, delivery dates and any announcement on markets outside Europe, as well as the ID.3 GTI in early 2027.
