Tesla Q3 Profit Falls 43% as Spending Surges, and Unsupervised FSD Slips to 2027

Revenue was flat at about $28 billion, but research spending jumped 69 percent, and Tesla now says the first unsupervised FSD in owners' cars is targeted for the second quarter of 2027.

Tesla Q3 Profit Falls 43% as Spending Surges, and Unsupervised FSD Slips to 2027

Tesla reported third-quarter revenue of about $28.0 billion on October 21, flat on a year earlier, while profit fell sharply as the company spent far more on research and artificial intelligence. On the earnings call, Tesla also put the first unsupervised Full Self-Driving in customer cars at the second quarter of 2027, and only inside Robotaxi zones (Electrek, Tesla's Q3 update filed with the SEC).

The numbers

Tesla Q320262025Change
Revenue$28,046m$28,095mFlat
Operating income$718m$1,624m-56%
Net income (common shareholders)$787m--43%
GAAP diluted EPS$0.22$0.39-44%
Non-GAAP EPS$0.48$0.50-4% (beat $0.45 consensus)
R&D spending$2,761m$1,630m+69%
Free cash flow$1.53bn$3.99bn-62%
Deliveries486,532--2.1%

Non-GAAP figures are Tesla's own framing and exclude items, such as stock-based compensation, that the standard accounts include. Stock-based pay nearly doubled to $1.17 billion. The operating margin was 2.6 percent, up from 1.4 percent in the second quarter but well below 5.8 percent a year ago. Tesla still held about $45.4 billion in cash and investments.

Where the money went

The squeeze came from costs: total operating expenses rose 39 percent to $4.78 billion, driven by AI, Optimus and research, and capital spending was $4.73 billion in the quarter. Regulatory credit income, once a reliable profit cushion, shrank 73 percent to $113 million after Tesla reversed $475 million of credit revenue for contractual returns.

On the car side, Tesla built 464,391 vehicles, and Elon Musk said battery availability is still the main limit on volumes. Automotive revenue was $20.56 billion. Energy storage deployments of 13.7 GWh missed the roughly 15.9 GWh analysts expected, and energy revenue fell 16 percent to about $2.88 billion, partly because of tariff-related refunds. Services grew 33 percent to about $4.6 billion.

The FSD timeline moves again, and narrows

Tesla AI chief Ashok Elluswamy said unsupervised FSD in customer cars is targeted for the second quarter of 2027. But the first step is narrow: owners will be able to add their cars to Tesla's managed Robotaxi fleet, and the cars will drive themselves unsupervised only inside designated Robotaxi zones, not anywhere (Electrek, Not a Tesla App).

Tesla has logged nearly two million cumulative unsupervised miles and runs Robotaxi in six US metro areas, mostly in small geofenced zones; the Bay Area service still uses a safety driver. In July 2025 Musk said unsupervised FSD would arrive by the end of that year in certain areas, and owners of cars with the older HW3 computer have been told their hardware cannot run it, with no clear upgrade path.

Optimus and Cybercab

Tesla said production of the Optimus humanoid robot has begun at Fremont. Musk cautioned against high expectations, said customer deliveries are planned by the end of 2027, and tied the AI5 chip's integration into Optimus to around April 2027. Cybercab rides began in Austin on September 3; Musk described it as closer to a transport service than a car owners buy, and said customer purchases might come around 2027.

What it means for India

Tesla sells imported cars in India, but FSD is not offered here, and nothing on the call changes that. For Indian buyers the more relevant signal is Musk's comment that battery supply limits production, which affects how many cars Tesla can allocate to newer markets.

What the market made of it

Shares fell in after-hours trading. Reports disagree on whether Tesla trimmed its 2026 capital spending plan: several outlets say about $20 billion, while Electrek says the quarterly letter kept the earlier figure of more than $25 billion, so we are not stating a figure.

What to watch next

The Robotaxi expansion Musk promised before year end, any sign that battery supply is easing, and whether research spending keeps outrunning revenue. The Q2 2027 FSD target will be the clearest test of Tesla's autonomy claims.
