The two Metro Redux games have received a free next-generation update on Xbox Series X and S, giving players a choice of native 4K at 60 frames per second or upscaled 4K at 120 frames per second. Developer 4A Games announced the update on Xbox Wire on October 29, 2026, and it is live now, according to publisher Deep Silver.
What the update adds
The update covers Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux. In a post on Xbox Wire, 4A Games' John Bloch described the two display modes as "either true 4K resolution at 60fps or upscaled 4K at an even smoother 120fps." The studio uses its own TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing to reach the higher frame rate.
Beyond resolution, the games get more detailed textures and refined lighting and shadows. The update is optimised for the Xbox Ally and Ally X handhelds, supports the Xbox controller's Impulse Triggers, and Xbox Play Anywhere support is described as being added.
A caveat on 120fps
Xbox Wire's wording suggests the 120fps mode applies across Series X and S. Deep Silver's patch notes say the 120fps mode is for Series X and do not state that Series S gets it. Until the studio clarifies, players on Series S should expect the 60fps mode at best and check the in-game options.
Price and saves
The update itself costs nothing for existing owners. Xbox Wire lists the two-game bundle at $29.99, with a $4.49 sale price shown on the listing. Deep Silver notes that for the Microsoft Store upgrade path, saves do not carry over, which matters for anyone partway through a campaign. We did not find India pricing, so no rupee price is given here.
Same update on other platforms
Deep Silver says the same update also covers PS5 and PS5 Pro and PC. On PS5 and PS5 Pro it offers 4K at 60 frames per second or upscaled 4K at 120, with PSSR upscaling on the Pro and DualSense adaptive trigger support. On PC the update includes DLSS and FSR support. We have not confirmed whether the PlayStation release is timed identically.
Why now
The timing ties to Metro 2039, which 4A Games says launches on February 4, 2027. More than 50 million players have played the series since 2010, according to a 4A Games statement. Refreshing the two older games gives newcomers a cleaner way to catch up on the story and keeps the series in view for the three months before the new release.
Explosion, which covered the update on October 30, reports that hints of the upgrade first appeared in early October, so the release was not a total surprise to followers of Xbox store listings.
What this means for players
Both games were first released on previous console generations and remastered as Redux editions. They are linear first-person shooters with tight corridors and dark environments, which suits lighting and shadow improvements more than open-world titles would. A high frame rate also helps on a gaming handheld, where responsiveness matters more than pixel counts.
For Game Pass subscribers and owners of the Redux games on Xbox, there is no cost to try the update, so the main decision is which mode to use. A 120Hz display or monitor is needed to see any benefit from the higher frame rate option, and players without one should pick the native 4K 60fps mode.
What to watch next
Watch for 4A Games to clarify Series S support for the 120fps mode, for Xbox Play Anywhere support to go live, and for more Metro 2039 details before the February 4 launch.
