iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 18 Pro Max: Which One Should You Buy in India?

Apple's two top iPhones share the same chip, the same camera system and the same software. What separates them is screen size, battery life and price. This comparison goes through each area using Apple's specifications and Indian pricing (Outlook India, Beebom).

Quick verdict

The iPhone 18 Pro is the better pick if you want a phone that is easy to use one-handed and costs ₹15,000 less. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is the better pick if battery life and a bigger screen matter more than pocket size. Performance and photo quality should be very close between the two.

Display and size

The screen is the most visible difference: 6.3 inches on the Pro and 6.9 inches on the Pro Max, both 120Hz LTPO. Both get a smaller Dynamic Island that can show up to three Live Activities at once while still handling Face ID. The Pro Max gives more room for video, games, maps and reading; the Pro is easier to hold and pocket.

Performance: the same A20 Pro

Both use the A20 Pro on a 2-nanometre process. Apple says it has 50 percent more memory bandwidth than the A19 Pro, a 6-core CPU with integrated Neural Accelerators, and a 7-core GPU up to 40 percent faster than last year's. The dual 16-core Neural Engine has 32 cores in total, which Apple says doubles the AI processing power of the A19 Pro.

Cooling is new too: the chip sits beside its memory and attaches directly to a redesigned vapour chamber with three times the surface area of the iPhone 17 Pro's, for up to 40 percent better sustained performance, Apple claims. Because both share this design, you should not expect a meaningful speed difference.

Camera: identical on both

Neither phone has a camera advantage. The headline change is the 48MP Fusion Main camera's variable aperture, with six laser-cut blades and four settings; Apple says it opens to ƒ/1.48 for low light, uses ƒ/1.8 for portraits and narrows to ƒ/4 to keep a group in focus.

Other camera changes on both models:

  • Pro controls in the Camera app for aperture, shutter speed, white balance and a histogram.
  • Photographic Styles with new texture and grain controls.
  • Cinematic effects applied after capture on video at up to 60fps, and 4K Dolby Vision time-lapse.
  • Apple Reference Image, an opt-in feature that saves a signed, unalterable reference copy to prove a photo has not been edited; Apple says it is not available in China at launch, and capture is not available in the EU at launch.

Battery and charging: where the Pro Max pulls ahead

This is the biggest practical gap. Apple's video playback ratings depend on SIM configuration, and India is not an eSIM-only market, so Apple quotes two hours less here than in the US.

Battery and chargingiPhone 18 ProiPhone 18 Pro Max
Video playback, eSIM-only models (US and others)Up to 36 hoursUp to 45 hours
Video playback, other markets including IndiaUp to 34 hoursUp to 43 hours
Typical usage on a full chargeNot statedUp to 30 hours (Apple's usage model)
Fast chargingUp to 50% in about 15 minutes wired, or 50% in 30 minutes wirelesslyAbout 7 hours of video from 5 minutes of wired charging
Battery capacityAbout 4,288mAh (reported)About 5,567mAh (reported)

Playback figures are Apple's claims, and Apple does not publish mAh capacities, so those are unofficial reports. Apple says the "largest increase in battery life ever on iPhone" applies to eSIM-only Pro Max models, which use the space freed by removing the SIM tray, so the gain in markets with a SIM tray is smaller, though the Pro Max still has the clearly larger battery.

Software and AI

Both ship with iOS 27, released on September 14, and Siri AI, rolling out in beta starting in English. Apple Intelligence tools such as Spatial Reframing, Extend, an upgraded Clean Up and photorealistic Image Playground are available on both; features vary by language and region.

Known issues so far

Some US iPhone 18 Pro Max owners on AT&T have lost cellular service, a fault Apple says needs a hardware replacement on affected phones, and some Burgundy units of both models have shown fading around the camera. Neither issue has been reported as widespread outside those cases.

Price in India

The Pro Max costs ₹15,000 more at every storage tier, and the Pro series costs about ₹30,000 more than the iPhone 17 Pro series did at launch (91mobiles).

StorageiPhone 18 ProiPhone 18 Pro Max
256GB₹1,64,900₹1,79,900
512GB₹1,89,900₹2,04,900
1TB₹2,39,900₹2,54,900
2TB₹3,14,900₹3,29,900

In the US, Apple prices the Pro from $1,199 and the Pro Max from $1,299. Pre-orders opened on September 12 and sales began on September 18 in India and more than 65 countries and regions.

Which should you buy?

Choose the iPhone 18 Pro if you:

  • Want a phone you can use comfortably with one hand.
  • Prefer a lighter phone and a lower price.
  • Are happy with a full day of battery life.

Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you:

  • Watch a lot of video, play games or navigate for long stretches.
  • Want the biggest screen for reading, editing and multitasking.
  • Care most about battery life and will accept the extra ₹15,000.

If you are unsure, hold both in a store first, since the size difference is more noticeable in the hand than on paper.
