God of War Laufey Delayed to 20 May 2027, Three Months After Its February Date

Santa Monica Studio has delayed God of War Laufey from 16 February 2027 to 20 May 2027, a wait of just over three months. The PS5 exclusive stays on a single platform, and the studio announced the move in a statement on 4 November.

What the studio said

The statement, posted to social media and signed by the studio, as Gematsu reports, thanks players for their excitement since the June reveal. The key line reads "we've made the decision to delay God of War Laufey's release to May 20, 2027," as Game Informer reproduces it. The team says it will use the time for "finishing touches" and to take the game to its "fullest potential," in wording repeated by Push Square and Kotaku.

Notably, the studio gave no specific cause. There is no mention of a technical problem, a staffing issue or a change in scope, and none of the outlets we checked reported one. Treat any explanation beyond polish as speculation until Sony or the studio says more. Santa Monica closed by thanking fans for their patience and promising to share more updates soon, which suggests marketing will resume ahead of the new date. That leaves players with a firm date but no new footage yet, and no explanation of what exactly the extra months will be spent on.

The game in brief

Laufey is a single-player action-adventure for PS5 developed by SIE Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It stars Faye, the late wife of series hero Kratos, who finds herself in the Everywhen, an afterlife realm. Game Informer reports she fights creatures and monsters drawn from several mythologies, with a talking gelatinous cube and a talking sword sash among her companions.

Kotaku adds that the story runs parallel to the 2018 God of War and to Ragnarok, and that the studio has also confirmed a separate Kratos-led game in development that will tie into Laufey. The game was revealed in June 2026 at a State of Play, and Push Square says it was shown with 23 minutes of gameplay. Gematsu notes the February date had been announced in July, so the game has now slipped from a window that was only a few months old.

A crowded early 2027

A May date moves Laufey out of what many players expect to be a busy February. Push Square observes that the game will still launch within a year of its announcement, which is quick by the standards of big first-party releases. Reader reaction there is mixed, with many accepting the delay as sensible and others disappointed.

Sony's own numbers hint at the commercial side. In its November filing for the quarter to 30 September, Sony raised its full-year gaming forecast but said first-party software sales would be lower than planned because of a title release date change. The filing does not name the game, and it was published a day after the Laufey announcement, so we cannot confirm the two are linked. It is a reasonable thing to ask about, but it is not a reported fact.

Pre-orders and India

Pre-order bonuses and a collector's edition were announced in September and October according to headlines on the Game Informer and Kotaku pages, but those pages do not give details we could verify, and we have not confirmed a standard edition price. Sony has not announced India pricing or an India pre-order page that we could find. Indian players who have already pre-ordered on the PlayStation Store should check their order for the updated release date, since store listings often take time to refresh after a delay.

Indian players weighing a purchase can instead look at the PlayStation Store Black Friday sale, which Indian outlets report is live until 30 November, though its discounts apply to existing games and not to Laufey.

What to watch next

The first thing to look for is a new trailer or gameplay deep dive, which the studio says is coming. Any change to pre-order terms, including refunds or bonus content, will matter to buyers who committed in September. Sony's next earnings report in early 2027 may show whether the schedule shift moved revenue between quarters, and the studio may also say more about the Kratos game tied to Laufey. Until then, 20 May 2027 is the only date that stands, and it is worth treating as firm only after the studio repeats it in a trailer or on the store page. Delays at this stage of development are usually about final bug fixing and balancing, though the studio has not said that is the case here.
