Gears of War: E-Day Beats the Gears 5 Steam Record, Peaking at 31,517 Players at Launch

Gears of War: E-Day peaked at 20,374 concurrent players on Steam during its early access window, roughly double the 10,196 record held by Gears 5, according to figures reported by Pure Xbox, Gameranx and Altchar. The game launched fully on October 6, 2026 (Altchar, Insider Gaming).

<blockquote><strong>Update, October 25:</strong> On launch day the Steam peak passed 31,000, reaching 31,517 according to SteamDB data, about three times Gears 5's best (<a href="https://www.notebookcheck.net/Gears-of-War-E-Day-Steam-player-count-reaches-31K-topping-sales-charts-on-release-date.1418299.0.html">Notebookcheck</a>). Reactions differ: Notebookcheck calls it a franchise record, while <a href="https://tech4gamers.com/?p=366209">Tech4Gamers</a> argues the Steam numbers suggest modest sales.</blockquote>

What the numbers say

Gears game on SteamPeak concurrent players
E-Day, launch day (October 6, 2026)31,517
E-Day, free multiplayer beta (August 2026)22,084
E-Day, early access (October 2, 2026)20,374
Gears 5 (September 2019)10,196
Gears of War: Reloaded (2025)7,351
Gears Tactics (2020)4,819

Early access began on October 1 for Premium Edition owners and Game Pass subscribers, as listed on the official Gears of War site. Pure Xbox credits the 20,374 peak to a Steam statistics account post on October 2, and Gameranx attributes the same figure to SteamDB. On October 2 the game was Steam's top seller in the US and third worldwide. The August open beta had already reached 22,084, so the early access peak was not E-Day's own best at that point.

The figures come with caveats. Steam is only one storefront: E-Day also runs on Xbox Series X and S, through the Microsoft Store and Xbox on PC, none of which appear in Steam charts, and Microsoft has not published player totals.

Critics are broadly positive

Before launch, Gameranx reported a Metacritic score of 86 on Xbox Series X and S from 54 reviews and on PC from 27 reviews; the score later settled at 88 as more reviews arrived. Altchar described early Steam user reviews as Very Positive, and critics praised the modernised movement and weighty gunplay. Pure Xbox called the campaign a monumental triumph for Xbox and its game of the year.

E-Day is a prequel set fourteen years before the original Gears of War, following a young Marcus Fenix during Emergence Day at the start of the Locust War. It is built on Unreal Engine 5, supports 4K at up to 60 frames per second, and offers a campaign, split-screen co-op, Horde Siege and competitive PvP.

Series S gets attention

Pure Xbox quotes Digital Foundry as saying the game uses the SSD as a new tier of memory to supplement the 10GB of GDDR6 on the Series S, through a bespoke system built with Xbox's platform team. Pure Xbox reports that this let the developers avoid major quality cuts, and the Series S version drew praise on social media, including one post with more than 500,000 views.

Editions

Pre-orders opened on June 7, 2026. The Standard Edition is sold digitally and physically. The digital-only Premium Edition includes up to five days of early access, seasonal packs and 1,000 Iron, with an upgrade path for Standard owners. A Collector's Edition for Xbox Series X and Steam adds a Marcus and Dom statue, a COG tag replica, an art print and a SteelBook, and every pre-order carries an Exfil Dom character skin and an Exfil weapon skin set.

PlayStation question

Gameranx reports that the game will remain a permanent Xbox console exclusive, while Altchar says it will eventually reach PlayStation 5. The Xbox product page lists only Xbox Series X and S, Windows and Steam, so a PlayStation release is unconfirmed.

What to watch next
