Windows 11 Insider Builds Add a Cloud Rebuild Shortcut and Unicode 17 Support

Microsoft's October 2 Insider builds put Cloud Rebuild, which reinstalls Windows from Windows Update, in Settings, and add 4,803 new Unicode characters.

Microsoft pushed a batch of Windows 11 Insider builds on October 2, and the common thread is Cloud Rebuild, a recovery option that reinstalls Windows from Windows Update instead of from local files or a USB drive. The Beta channel build adds a Settings shortcut to it, while separate Experimental builds bring Share and File Explorer changes (Pureinfotech, Windows Report).

What Microsoft shipped

BuildChannel and versionMain changes
26220.9587 (KB5124197)Beta, 25H2Cloud Rebuild entry in Settings, Unicode 17.0, faster Settings home page
28020.3142Beta, 26H1Cloud Rebuild access (per Thurrott)
28120.3151Experimental, 26H1"Remove" and "Remove and Sanitize" file-removal options (per Thurrott)
29680.1000Experimental (Future Platforms)Pinned apps in Share, app versions in Settings, File Explorer preview changes

According to Microsoft's release notes, Beta build 26220.9587 is based on version 25H2 and arrives through an enablement package as part of Microsoft's Windows quality work (Eleven Forum). It adds a Cloud Rebuild entry under Settings, System, Recovery, and Microsoft says the Settings home page loads faster in certain scenarios.

The same build updates Windows text shaping for Unicode 17.0, which adds 4,803 characters and four newly encoded scripts: Beria Erfe, Sidetic, Tai Yo and Tolong Siki. That is mostly invisible to English-language users but matters for people who work in lesser-served writing systems and for apps that rely on the operating system's text engine.

NTCompatible reports five builds in total that day. Thurrott notes that version 26H1 is exclusive to PCs with Qualcomm silicon and uses a separate codebase, and that version 27H2 is expected in late 2027 to bring the platforms back together.

Why Cloud Rebuild matters

NTCompatible describes Cloud Rebuild as letting users reinstall Windows entirely from Windows Update, removing the need for USB drives or bootable media when a machine will not start. For a home user with a broken PC and no second computer, that beats borrowing a machine to build recovery media. The new Settings entry only makes it easier to find; it does not change how the recovery works, and it should not be triggered just to inspect it.

The Remove and Sanitize option is meant to make data recovery harder than a plain removal when passing a PC on. NTCompatible also says IT administrators can trigger a Cloud Rebuild remotely through the Recovery configuration service provider. Thurrott adds that Magnifier gains preset zoom steps and the option to type an exact zoom percentage on the 26H1 builds, and NTCompatible lists more consistent folder view settings and address bar improvements in File Explorer.

The Experimental Future Platforms build

Build 29680.1000 lets you pin favourite apps in the Windows Share window, and Settings, Apps, Installed apps now shows version numbers at the top level for packaged apps. In File Explorer, downloaded HTML files carry a Preview anyway button to acknowledge the warning and view the file, while files such as PDFs preview automatically.

Microsoft says it fixed compatibility problems with USB Audio Class 1.0 multichannel headsets, Remote Desktop window sizing, visual issues in alternate taskbar positions, messaging when parental controls block an app, and extreme lag some Insiders saw over time. Known issues include performance degradation with extended use, a VMware Workstation Pro 17.6.4 compatibility concern and green screens on VMware devices; Windows Report says the VMware blank-window problem is fixed while the green screens are still under investigation. Experimental builds can be unstable, and features may change or never ship.

What to watch

Because the Beta build runs on 25H2, the Cloud Rebuild entry and Unicode 17.0 are the items most likely to reach regular Windows 11 users first, though Microsoft has given no date. Watch whether Cloud Rebuild reaches the Release Preview channel and whether Microsoft documents exactly what the sanitize option does. Experimental builds should be kept to test machines.
