Mistral Raises €3 Billion Led by Samsung in Europe's Largest-Ever Tech Equity Round
The French AI lab's Series D values it at more than €21 billion post-money, nearly double its 2025 valuation, and will fund data centres and compute capacity.

French AI lab Mistral has closed a €3 billion Series D at a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion, which it calls the largest equity round ever completed by a European technology company. Samsung Electronics led the round, with the EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund and existing investor PSG Equity as co-leads (Euronews, Orrick).

Money for the compute race
The round mixes financial and strategic capital, giving Mistral both balance sheet and industrial partners as it competes with US rivals. Frontier models are hugely expensive to train and serve, and CEO Arthur Mensch said the money will build data centres and computing capacity, some of which Mistral can rent to others. He said the company expects its compute ownership to grow by around 100% over the next five years. Mistral operates in 20 countries and serves more than 125 global enterprises, including Airbus, ASML and HSBC (AI Weekly).
Samsung's lead role is the more interesting signal. It makes memory chips, runs foundry capacity and sells consumer devices, all of which could benefit from a closer relationship with a frontier model maker. Neither company has announced plans to put Mistral models in Samsung devices.
Why it matters beyond France
Europe has spent years worrying it has no answer to the American AI giants. Mistral's rise, from a lab seeded in 2023 to a company worth more than €21 billion, is the closest thing the continent has to one. The EU has invested heavily in the idea of digital sovereignty, and a European lab raising this much from European and global investors gives that argument financial weight.
Still, €21 billion is a fraction of OpenAI's or Anthropic's valuations, and Mistral's models, while competitive, have not displaced the leaders in enterprise adoption. It needs to turn this capital into a breakout product or deep enterprise contracts to justify the price.
No India-specific plans were announced with the round.
What to watch next
Watch how quickly Mistral turns the money into data centre capacity and a more capable flagship model, and whether the Samsung partnership extends into products.
