OpenAI Reportedly Nears a $30 Billion Raise at a $1.25 Trillion Valuation

OpenAI is reportedly close to raising up to $30 billion at a pre-money valuation of $1.25 trillion, according to CNBC's reporting relayed by TechCrunch on October 22. The round is said to be led by investors from the United Arab Emirates and by Coatue, ahead of a possible stock market listing. OpenAI declined to comment, so everything below is reported and not confirmed.

What has been reported

The original account cites unnamed people familiar with the matter, and the terms are still being negotiated and could change. If the full $30 billion is raised, the post-money valuation would be about $1.28 trillion (The AI Insider). A valuation above $1 trillion would make OpenAI the most valuable private company ever. OpenAI reportedly told investors it hopes to have signatures by the end of next week, which concerns investor commitments, not a completed closing.

The new figure is lower than Bloomberg's earlier number, though that report may have used a different basis. Against the March round, the reported valuation would be roughly a 50 percent step up in seven months.

The UAE link

The UAE funding could be paired with a commercial deal for more computing capacity in the country, according to one person cited in the reporting. The UAE investors have not been named, and no UAE party, Coatue or OpenAI has confirmed the discussions.

The IPO backdrop

OpenAI filed confidential IPO paperwork in June 2026. Chief financial officer Sarah Friar told employees in August that OpenAI would go public in 2027, while chief executive Sam Altman said in September that now would be an ill-advised moment to list. Those statements are consistent with a bridge-style private raise while the company waits, though OpenAI has not described this round that way.

Rival Anthropic is on a similar path: its draft IPO filing reportedly shows $16.3 billion of first-half revenue.

What is not known

We do not know who the UAE investors are, how much each participant would put in, whether the raise is new shares or partly a sale by existing holders, or what rights investors would receive. The reports say "up to" $30 billion, so the final size may be smaller. The reporting also does not say what OpenAI would spend the money on; the compute pairing suggests data centre capacity, but that is an inference, not a statement from the company.

Why it matters, including for India

A raise at this level would set a benchmark for every AI lab seeking funding or preparing to list, and it would deepen the Gulf region's role as a source of AI capital and computing. For Indian users, the immediate effect is indirect: OpenAI has called India one of its largest markets for ChatGPT, and more capital and compute generally means more capacity and cheaper tiers in price-sensitive markets, but OpenAI has made no India-specific commitment tied to this round.

What to watch next

An official OpenAI announcement, any filing or confirmation naming the investors, and whether signatures arrive by the reported deadline. A change in the headline valuation would show how firm the talks are.
